As the seasons turn and the natural world begins its slow retreat into winter, Roots + Rituals brings together a collection of works by artists whose practices, brought into conversation, evoke the ancient threads connecting us to the earth, to one another, and to those who came before us.
Curated for this moment of seasonal transition at Place(d) Contemporary in Painswick, the exhibition draws on the shifting rhythms of the natural world, the enduring presence of ancestral memory, and the human impulse to create rituals that connect us to something older than ourselves. It is a time associated with endings and renewal, remembrance and reflection, when the veil between the living and the dead is said to grow thin, and our relationship with the unseen comes into sharper focus.
Rather than offering a singular interpretation, Roots + Rituals allows these ideas to emerge through the interplay of different artistic voices, materials and perspectives. The works invite us to consider the traces we inherit, the stories we carry, and the rituals — conscious or otherwise — through which we make sense of our place in the world.
Featuring work by Stanley Donwood, sometimes referred to as the sixth member of Radiohead, alongside new works by Anna Matykiewicz, Andrew J Millar, Paul Smith, Teddy Hansen, Marcelina Amelia and more, the exhibition brings together a diverse group of artists whose work resonates with themes of nature, memory, transformation and belonging.
As the earth retreats into winter, Roots + Rituals offers an invitation to slow down and look more closely at the connections that bind us to the past, to the land beneath our feet, and to the cycles that continue beyond our understanding. A seasonal gathering of works, it explores the possibility that what connects us most deeply is often what remains unseen.
Join us at Place(d) Contemporary to celebrate the exhibition with drinks, music and a DJ, bringing people together for an evening of art, conversation and seasonal gathering.
