Eugene S. Robinson made a life out of pushing language and communication into visceral avenues. As frontman of the experimental rock band Oxbow, and more recently of Buñuel, he turned the human voice into something feral and exact at once (The Quietus 2026). Through his substack and elsewhere his essays and reporting on culture, politics and combat sport carried the same directness. In July 2026, a stroke took much of that away, stripping him of the power to speak, sing, read and write (Lambgoat 2026).
For a man whose living came from language, the timing hits hard but we hope it wont hold him down. Reports say the wit survives, and so does the fighter. Robinson holds a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, and anyone who has rolled with him knows he treats the mat as a stage (Robinson K 2026). Recovery will demand intensive physical rehabilitation, speech and language therapy, and months of unglamorous work.
Those of us at Trebuchet carry our own debt to him. Robinson shared hard-won knowledge of publishing and the media trade as freely as he shared everything else over a dialogue that stretched over many years. Despite the many tours to the UK, shared friends, and perhaps a shared aesethetic, we never met in person. The idea was when it happens, it happens. Whatever. The weird have a time that ticks to it’s own tock. We’re all on the road and the meeting would be mighty. Robinson is a polymath by weird instinct, he’s moved between fighting, music, writing and digital media without any visible effort. We wish him and his family well and know that like geological shamanism, the spirit is moves, but it might take some time.

Kasia Robinson, his wife, put it plainly when she launched the gofundme appeal:
“A stroke changed everything. It robbed Eugene of his ability to speak, sing, read, and write. For someone whose life has been built around language, music, and connection, it’s hard to imagine a crueler twist. But the person behind all those words is still here. The wit is still there. The fighter is still there.” (Robinson K 2026)
Support has come from the labels as well. On 30 July 2026 the pan-label collective The Blue Tapes House Band released Vol. 6 (2026), a benefit record whose proceeds go straight to Robinson’s medical and rehabilitation costs (Blue Tapes 2026). The premise carries a hard analogy: Blue Tapes artists reinterpret samples of “silence” lifted from film. Five contributors appear, moving from the lo-fi post-rock of The All Golden to the fractured noise of Yapping Portal, with Ben Richter, Wild Anima and Ratkiller between them. A record assembled from silence is at once the sort of dead-eyed tribute Robinson would admire, but also a recognition of one of the underground art’s loudest presences.
Two routes lead to the same place. Readers can give through the GoFundMe organised by Kasia, or buy Vol. 6 on Bandcamp and send every penny toward the same fight (Robinson K 2026; Blue Tapes 2026). Every contribution counts, and, as the campaign notes, sharing the appeal matters almost as much. The aim stays simple: to help Eugene get his voice back, and, before long, to let him turn “the dojo into a pirate ship” again (Robinson K 2026).

The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance. – Aristotle
