Louise Boulter is a painter and illustrator based in Frome. Her practice draws on theatre, animation and vintage photography, with her research taking its cue from a background in theatre and narrative illustration.

In her first-ever solo show, she brings a cast of characters inspired by her family to life through traditional pantomime archetypes. A villainous Stag Beetle, a chorus of flowers and a bearded dame all dance across the paper in Louise’s rhythmic, joyful style.

The resulting works are magical. As though lit by candlelight, the warm tones and faded faces recall the colour palette of a time when life felt full of mischief, masquerade and wonder.
