I’m going to risk swerving into hippy territory here, but everything is music – or perhaps more properly, everything can be perceived as music.
When it comes down to it, music is something happening over time. Anything you experience can come under this classification. Of course, most of us demand more of music than random sounds – but my point is not to spend your life trying to perceive everything as music and being awed by it, but to be open to that option.
The moon makes music, and the stars and the trees. I know, it all sounds a bit new age – but I think that when you are open to experiencing anything as music, you open yourself up to new and greater inspiration.

David Learnt composition (harmony, counterpoint and orchestration) to degree level through studying Schoenbergs Fundamentals of Musical Composition, the classic text on twentieth century harmony by Vincent Persichetti, Henry Mancini’s Sounds and Scores, Rimsky-Korsakov’s excellent books on orchestration as well as studying any scores that intrigued me. He is a founder member of two bands, avant pop duo Cnut, and orchestral doombience outfit Regolith, and have performed across Europe with them.
